Mission:

Our mission is to promote the full integration and participation of people with disabilities in all activities, services and employment opportunities of the community. The Commission advises and assists municipal officials in ensuring compliance with Federal and State disability laws and provides information, referrals, guidance and technical assistance in all disability related matters.

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Commission on Disability may have up to nine members who are appointed by the Town Administrator. A majority of the members must have a disability, or be a family member of a person with a disability. One member is appointed by the Town and must be a Town Official. The remaining members may be anyone who has an interest in making Dedham more accessible. Primary responsibilities include:

• Working on projects to improve access for persons with disabilities, such as our financial support of accessible playground equipment at the elementary schools.

• Responding to requests for our opinion regarding variance requests submitted to the Building Department which are referred to us by the Architectural Access Board as part of the permitting process.

• Conducting access site surveys on behalf of the Architectural Access Board and/or at the planning stage of new construction or a major renovation of a public building or a public property, such as the High School athletic fields.

• Serving as a contact and advocate for Town residents who have a disability related question or complaint.

• Providing information and referral services about disability issues to residents.

• Operating the Handicapped Parking Patrol and managing the revenues derived from the fines generated from violating handicapped parking laws in Dedham.

• Raising awareness of disability issues among Town Officials and residents.
